Tiny Onion to publish 12 graphic novels.

J. Michael Straczynski pens Marvel team-ups.

Absolute Batman absolutely sells out.

This is Comic Book Club News for October 14, 2024.

James Tynion IV’s imprint Tiny Onion was already prepping to make a big splash at New York Comic Con. And now they’ve announced a partnership with Inklore, an imprint of Random House Worlds, to publish 12 books, comprising three original graphic novel series.

The first series is titled The Most Beautiful People Who Never Loved Me, and per PR provided to Comic Book Club, “follows a magician whose revolutionary performances bring him great professional success at a significant personal cost.”

Added Tynion IV, “THE MOST BEAUTIFUL PEOPLE WHO NEVER LOVED ME is the flagship, and I’ll be writing it solo. The Book Market has a long production timeline, so it’ll be a few years before you hear a lot more about it, and about the other titles in our line, but know that I’m not lying when I say that Tiny Onion has years of books in the pipeline hitting every corner of the comics medium.”

The first of three volumes of the series is currently scheduled for release in 2028.

J. Michael Straczynski is launching Marvel‘s weirdest team-up book ever. In fact, it’s so weird that it won’t be a miniseries or ongoing series. Instead, it’s several one-shots pairing characters like Doctor Doom and Rocket Raccoon, or Nick Fury and Fin Fang Foom. No, I’m not making either of those up.

Said Straczynski: “I like to go where the fun is, and the idea of putting together Marvel characters who had either never been paired before, or only minimally, seemed like it would be a ton of fun, and it was even more of a blast than I anticipated.”

Other team-ups include Captain America and Volstagg, Hulk and Doctor Strange, Ghost Rider and Galactus, and perhaps most anticipated, Aunt May and Agatha Harkness. The first issue will hit stores on January 22, 2025.

Before DC Comics Absolute Batman #1 hit stores, the publisher announced it had sold out at the distributor level, and was getting a second printing. And now with the issue in stores, that second printing has sold out, too, and the issue will get a third printing.

That’s a pretty successful launch for the series — and the new Absolute Universe, from DC. While initial orders indicate retailer interest, going to a third printing means someone beyond comic book stores is buying this issue. And based on chatter online, as well as at local shops here in Brooklyn, it certainly seems like the first issue of the new series by Scott Snyder and Nick Dragotta is a hit.

The second printing will hit stores on October 30, with all new covers. Absolute Batman #2 will hit stores on November 13. And then the third printing will arrive with even more new covers on November 27. Will the upcoming Absolute Wonder Woman and Absolute Superman have the same level of success? Stay tuned.
